Award-Winning Sculptor Creates adidas Logo in Sand

While walking next to the West Sands Beach in St. Andrews, I saw some impressive sand sculptures. I went down to the beach to see these sculptures first hand and met Doug Clement, Founding Director of the Kingsbarns Distillery. He hired an award-winning sculptor to promote his venture and create buzz around the Open Championship.

The venture is trying to get investors on board so they can open a whisky distillery at Kingsbarns Golf Club, where we played a couple days ago. The cool part is that these gentlemen are caddies at Kingsbarns. After countless golfers asking where the closest distillery was and pointing them about an hour away, they decided to start a venture and bring a distillery straight to Kingsbarns.

There are a lot of jokes going around town because the man who Doug hired to help make the whisky is from Australia. So a Scottish man is asking an Australian man how to make whisky!

After the message from Harry that it was time to step up our game, I asked if they could create the adidas logo. After telling them about the Wear in the World adventure I was on, they were happy to help me out. I hope you enjoy the video above on how award-winning sculptor, Peter Bignell, created the adidas logo. Harry, this sculpture is dedicated to you!

  1. Tom says:

I’m pretty sure Doug is making whisky, not whiskey! It’s different.

  2. Doug Clement says:

Tom is indeed correct for Scotch Whisky is spelled without an ‘e’ and any other whiskey (Canadian, Irish, American etc.) is spelled with an ‘e.’
Anyway on behalf of the Kingsbarns Distillery (www.kingsbarnsdistillery.com) Sand Sculpting Team (Doug Clement, Ian Mckie, Heather Brennan, Dawn & Peter Bignell http://www.pbsculptures.com) it was a pleasure working with you and we too are all behind ‘team steve’ for adidas golf’s ‘wear in the world’!

  4. Steve says:

Thanks Tom and Doug. I now know the proper spelling for whisky depending on what type it is and changed my blog. I did not know the different spellings. Learning something new everyday!

  9. Doug Clement says:

    Hi James
Sorry to disappoint but we are in the early stages of developing the distillery in terms of funding and planning. We hope start work by the end of the year though and be open next summer sometime. Thereafter it will be another 5 years till our main product, Kingsbarns Single Malt Scotch Whisky, will be available so 2016. We do however intend to sell a Kingsbarns Vatted Malt, Gin, Schnapps and a Liqueur and plan to have a cafe / restuarant and whisky tours once open next year.
